Chinquapin is a natural oasis from the hurried, frantic pace of the world. Set atop an idyllic mountain, just three miles from Cashiers, NC—the “Crown of the Carolinas”—we are a community immersed in nature and all its reverent bounty. Yet we are just minutes from world-class dining, shopping, art, and music. If one is looking for a sanctuary that provides solitude and culture in equal measure, then Chinquapin is that rare haven: a place that truly offers the best of both worlds.
A family retreat for
relaxation and adventure
Within our gates is a magical outdoor world just waiting to be discovered. Each day presents something new and meaningful. Chinquapin rises to 4,500 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, encompassing 2,000 acres in all, 700 of which are in permanent conservation with the North American Land Trust. Families here are presented with an amenity-rich living experience that encourages hiking, ATV’ing, fishing, swimming, canoeing…or simply observing the wonders of this natural paradise each and every day, no matter what the season.
The Carlton Legacy
From the very beginning, Chinquapin has been about the land. The first owners, Albert and Barbara Carlton, were Floridians. They discovered this property in 1960 seeking refuge from Hurricane Donna. They were immediately taken by the expansive mountain landscape in the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, which was worlds away from the risks and temperamental weather of coastal living. In its place, they found a year-round mountain retreat that was home to primitive forests, freshwater streams, gently rolling hills, and towering ridgelines. Just as the Carltons made Chinquapin their home to enjoy throughout the year, so it remains a refuge for families today, who seek reprieve form the urban grind and hectic work day.
